Steps for Using Beanie Babies to Encourage Reading and Writing at Home

  1. First I wrote a small personalized handwritten note to each of my students because I wanted them to feel special.
  2. Next I started shopping on Facebook Marketplace and bought some more beanie babies for CHEAP!
  3. Then I took a picture of every single beanie baby with a sign I created that said pet adoption.
  4. After that I made a pet adoption catalog for my students to look through.
  5. Then I created adoption paperwork for the students to fill out because I wanted them to practice writing.
  6. The students then had to return the paperwork to me and then I could approve their adoption.
  7. The paperwork was in and I was able to complete the adoption process.
  8. Last, pick an official adoption day and give those pets to their new adopted owners!

How did I encourage reading at home? I included a reading log with each pet adoption. Students are able to complete their reading log with their pets and return the reading log to me for a small prize. Students are able to complete a BINGO board to with their pets that encourages reading, math, and fun activities to complete with their pets.

Students Who Did Not Bring in the Paperwork

There were a few students who did not bring in the paperwork or I could not get ahold of the parents due to other circumstances. For those students I had them look through the catalog during class hours with me and I had them fill it out with me. This gave me a chance to work one on one with them on their writing as well.

Getting the Pets Ready for Adoption

The paperwork has been turned in and my students all have made their choices. They have all named their pets and told me how they would take care of them and promise to read to them every night!
