Track Students Progress Using a Data Wall

Do you ever feel overwhelmed with the amount of assessments you are doing? Do you have a ton of paperwork sitting in front of you, scattered around your desk or in a pile? Use this data wall to organize your assessments!

How Will a Data Wall Help My Students?

Kindergarteners are mainly working towards mastering:

  • uppercase and lowercase letter recognition
  • letter sounds
  • counting to 100
  • sight words

Teachers assess their students but the kids don’t really have the ability to see where they are or what you are trying to assess. I’m not sure about you but I am a visual learner and so are most of my Kindergarteners. The data wall is the perfect visual to connecting what their goal in the classroom to what they are learning about.

How Do I Use the Data Wall?

  1. Assess your students
  2. Print, cut, laminate and put up your wall!
  3. Put your students names on the legos, crayons and train.
  4. Explain the purpose of the data wall to your students.

How Do I Explain the Data Wall to My Students?

  1. Tell your students that they will have a goal to work on. If they learn all of their letter sounds they will have their name at the top of the crayon and they can earn a certificate. (Certificates math the data wall)
    • My students will also join my “letter and sound club” and will be able to eat lunch with me.
  2. If the students will try to count to 100. Put their name on the train, depending on how high they can count. This is an awesome visual. If the students are stuck on “39”, show them that 40 is next.

How Students Will Track Their Own Data

Students will be able to track their own data using a data notebook. After you assess your students, make sure to show them what their goal is. Have them color in where they currently are and ask them what their goal should be. The assessment sheets match the data wall!
